Do you ever have times when you need to use your coping skills
but you can’t remember them in the moment?
As a seasoned mental health therapist and a mom to two kids, I have had this happen to myself and everyone I’ve worked and talked with. Commonly, people say “I don’t understand, I know what to do when I’m calm but when I’m in the middle of the feelings, I forget everything!” This got me thinking about by rote memory. By rote memory is how we remember things we were taught when we were really little, and why we can recite a lot of those same things when we are older with very little prompting.
Using this theory, this card game was born! I developed a way to practice coping skills for all ages without it being boring and a chore. Calm uses traditional game rules similar to Go Fish and Slap Jack to reinforce memorizing calming skills. Learning skills by rote leads to easier access to those skills when needed. Calm has suggestions for coping skills that can be used in many areas of a youth and adults life.
These cards can be used with friends, families, individual and group counseling.
They can be used with pre-readers with help from others as a team to read the cards and match images.
Version 2 is currently available as a digital download for $15.00.
